What Is Kinesiology Taping and How Does It Work?
The Kinesio Taping® Method, one of several systems of kinesiology taping, is a definitive rehabilitative taping technique that is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process
while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion. It provides extended soft tissue manipulation, prolonging and enhancing the benefits of manual therapies such as ART and P-DTR. Kinesiology tape is latex-free, safe for populations ranging from pediatric to geriatric and can be worn for days at a time. It can even be worn in water. At The Body Mechanic, though I use the Kinesio Taping® method, I specifically use Rock Tape® brand tape due to its superior adhesive qualities. Kinesiology taping has been featured in every Olympic Games since 1994 and was worn by athletes from each and every sport in the 2008 games in Beijing.
Some of the benefits of kinesiology taping include:
- Relaxes overactive muscles
- Strengthens inhibited muscles
- Facilitates lymphatic drainage
- Improves circulation
- Mobilizes fascia
- Supports joints, ligaments and tendons
- Reduces pain and inflammation
- Supports muscles in movement 24/7
